Education and Facilitation of Non-Traditional Investments within Self-directed IRAs Learn the legal structuring of non-traditional investments within self-directed IRAs. You will learn about what is legal, and what is not allowed within IRS ERISA rules as retirement investment options. Many investors are lead to believe by their brokerage or investment firms that the only investments they can make with their retirement funds are marketable securities such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. This is simply not true!
All IRA custodians may choose to allow alternative investments like real estate, rental properties, and many other non marketable investments within their client's IRA's. However, most brokerage firms who serve as custodians do not offer self-directed accounts. Custodians that choose to offer self-directed IRA accounts give you the choice to invest non-traditional investments such as real estate, must be passive custodians. Passive custodians can not give investment advice. Most brokerage firms do give investment advice and have no interest in becoming a passive custodian. This is why there just aren't that many self-directed IRA custodians out there.
